The website Masterclass describes a podcast producer as the main member of the production team that is largely responsible for production oversight of the entire production (writing scripts, booking guests, handling equipment, recording the podcast, tracking podcast metrics, reviewing audience data and feedback) as well as overseeing the various aspects of each episode of a podcast series.
According to the website Waave, there are two million podcasts indexed on the Google search engine. Raneri and Company, the Australian creator and curator of podcasts explains that “2021 was the biggest year ever for podcasts, with the number of distinct podcast users aged 15-44 on Spotify growing by +34 percent.”
They anticipate that by the end of this year (2022), “higher levels of penetration and success” will be experienced as “the [podcast] industry gets bigger and bolder.”
Even as the podcast industry grows to reach higher heights, there are trends to indicate that the market is getting increasingly more competitive. While the podcast audience has grown by almost 30 percent between 2018 to 2021, this means that the platforms for podcast video and audio series have increased as well. The platform market is getting crowded with iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcast, Amazon Audible, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and more.
Because of the increased competition on the number of podcasts broadcast daily, the number of platforms for which to choose; this creates a huge amount of pressure on the podcast producer. Just a few of the job duties, job responsibilities that he/she needs to have the skills to make the podcast stand out from the crowd. Podcast producers also need to have the skills, knowledge and ability to improve the user experience (UX). Further, podcast producers must have the acumen to creatively find ways to broaden the audience through events marketing, promotions and live streams.
