Artificial Intelligence Job Responsibilities

There is a lot of noise in the media about ChatGPT and its competitor, DAN, and Microsoft Bing AI. But, what are they? And, how do they run?

Before we address these two questions. We look to the Oxford Dictionary to define artificial intelligence: it is the development of a computer system to be able to perform tasks requiring human intelligence encompassing perception, speech recognition, problem solving, decision making, memory and learning.

Artificial Intelligence Job Responsibilities Outlook

It is estimated that the career outlook for anyone seeking a job in the field of artificial intelligence is promising. In 2016, the growth for specialists situated in the artificial intelligence field grew 74% every year leading up to 2020!

The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects  that in a few short years (less than five), there will be an increase from 5,300 jobs in the field of artificial intelligence to almost 40,000.

Other Examples of Artificial Intelligence Devices

We have already discussed briefly ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing AI and DAN. Here are other examples of artificial intelligence devices.

  • Smart assistants like Alexa, Cortana, and Siri that give information virtually as their information (database/datasets) are stored in the cloud. Therefore, to access these assistants, the user would need to be connected to the internet
  • Music assistants like Pandora and Netflix who recommend songs and allow users to search and play any song, album, or playlist and store music and video recommendations
  • Customer service, technical support, insurance and/or banking agent that is programmed using software to provide and exchange information with the user via text or text-to-speech instead of speaking with a human. Only when the issue requires human intervention is the chat escalated.

Artificial Intelligence Job Responsibilities

Believe it or not, all computerized systems use some form of artificial intelligence to provide information to humans interacting with them. But in today’s time, the simplistic tasks of ancient computers have become so much more advanced. Users can ask questions, enter extensive text-based queries, submit follow up questions and even challenge faulty assumptions.

In turn, as humans interact with these artificial intelligence ‘chat boxes’ they enable it to learn in real time during the conversational exchange to reject requests it deems inappropriate.

If you are still confused, these systems are an upgraded version of the present time Alexa and the ancient website “Ask Jeeves.”

But we still haven’t addressed how these technological advances make it possible to embark on a promising career in the field of artificial intelligence. While many believe that artificial intelligence would do away with humans. This is definitely not the case.

In every instance a device or machine grounded in artificial intelligence requires a human to program it. Computers are only as smart at the humans who program them!

Artificial Intelligence Job Responsibilities

In the field of artificial intelligence, here are just a few of the job responsibilities, tasks and job duties expected:

  • human trainers with advanced knowledge of human psychology, teaching and learning pedagogy must develop and provide conversational exchanges elucidating both potential sides a conversation;
  • human trainers are required to play a user who asks questions in seek of knowledge and an AI assistant who plays the role of the artificial intelligence device.
  • computer programmers and computer engineers are need to facilitate these human to AI interactions by providing trainers with modeled suggestions to help them compose their questions as well as the AI-generated response.
  • database engineers and data analysts are required to help build and model databases and unique as well as standardized (pre-formatted) datasets that are transformed into a conversational dialogue format.
  • human behavioral scientists and psychologists with advanced knowledge of behavioral theories of learning, reinforcement and conditioning are involved so that the most optimal answer in any given scenario is given by the AI device. To do this, theoretical models were developed to rank-order potential responses by quality.
